Newsletter 3: Mercury Emission Control for Sewage Sludge Incinerators at Wastewater Treatment Plants

APC Technologies’ MercPure Series mercury and dioxins & furans emission control systems are in operation on numerous sewage sludge incinerators (SSIs) at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) around the US. Our systems work for both multiple hearth incinerators and fluidized bed incinerators and have been proven to be capable of hitting the new, strict mercury and dioxins & furans emission limits set forth in 40 CFR Part 60 Subpart LLLL for new and modified SSIs.

APC’s MercPure systems simultaneously control:

  • Mercury emissions
  • Dioxins & furans emissions
  • Organic HAP emissions (state-by-state limits)
  • Cadmium emissions
  • Particulate matter emissions
  • Lead emissions

APC’s emission control systems for SSIs are:

  • Tailored to the needs of each WWTP
  • Demonstrating compliance year after year for the SSIs
  • Achieving long carbon bed life (5-10 years) at the vast majority of sites
  • Demonstrating extremely high uptime

Our systems address emissions from both fluidized bed incinerators and multiple hearth incinerators, with some APC systems demonstrating mercury removal efficiencies of 99.9% and better. Learn more about our emission control for SSIs and read our case studies for specific application information.

Mercury Emission Control

APC also provides mercury emission control for other industries and processes besides sewage sludge incinerators, including:

  • Electronics recycling
  • Gold plants
  • Scrap metal recycling
  • Antimony and other metals production
  • Industrial boilers
  • Medical waste incinerators
  • Hazardous waste incinerators
  • Other applications

APC offers both fixed bed activated carbon and powdered activated carbon (PAC) injection systems for these applications.

Mercury emission removal efficiencies by APC’s MercPure FB fixed bed activated carbon systems are commonly 99%+ as measured by owner compliance testing, with carbon beds lasting 5 years or more between changeouts. Learn more about our mercury control systems.
