Today’s feature is a project we completed to control emissions from a large shredder operated at a metal recycling facility in the Midwestern United States, using one of our Ultra High-Efficiency Filter (UHF®) systems, pictured below.
The UHF® at Work in the Scrap Metal Recycling Industry
Emissions of wet, oily dust and fluff, as well as very fine ‘blue smoke,’ are a regulatory concern when it comes to scrap shredders. For shredder applications, APC strongly recommends installing an Ultra High-Efficiency Filter (UHF®) system to control particulate matter emissions (with a cyclone or a drop box as a pre-filter).
In the time since installing the first UHF® units on shredders 15 years ago, we’ve found the UHF® filters are preferred by owners of scrap shredders, for many reasons, including increased removal efficiency with lower energy requirements and better protection of downstream equipment. Since the completion of this project, WENDT Corporation’s emission testing has confirmed that the particulate matter removal performance of the UHF® filter is outstanding.
In addition to emissions from shredders, smoke emissions from torching operations at scrap yards are increasingly coming under regulatory scrutiny, and the UHF® filter offers excellent emission control of smoke generated by torching activities.
