Newsletter 2: Emission Control for Industrial Frying and Spray-Drying Operations

Food processing facilities, such as fryers and spray-dryers (for flavors and fragrances), can emit significant amounts of particulate matter (PM) and/or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during production, depending on the products being made.

With over two decades of experience, APC Technologies Inc. (APC) has the know-how to remove these emissions, whether to comply with air emissions regulations, to eliminate nuisance odors or emission deposits on plant roofs and other equipment, and/or to support corporate sustainability initiatives.

Industrial Frying Operations

Frying operations pose a challenge in part due to the greasy nature of the exhaust. Substantial PM, PM10, PM2.5 emissions – in the form of condensed fats/oils/grease, as well as fine smoke particles – are often present in the exhausts of industrial fryers of various meats, potatoes, and fried pastries, as examples.

APC uses either a one or two-step process depending on the customer’s needs – a grease entrapment stage for removing bulk amounts of condensed fats/oils/grease – and APC’s Ultra-High Efficiency Filter (UHF®) unit for the remaining fine smoke exhaust.

These control technologies are dry processes, in contrast to venturi or other wet scrubbers, and reduce plant water usage for the emission control system to zero. Wet/venturi scrubbers can consume millions of gallons of water per year, produce polluted wastewater, and are overall less energy efficient than dry processes.

Depending on the needs of the client, VOC control may also be required, which APC can also provide, with multiple VOC control technologies available to compare. APC evaluates regulatory requirements, VOC loading of the gas stream, thermal energy considerations and the lifecycle cost of each system, and will recommend the most cost-efficient, compliant technology to the customer.

Spray-Drying Operations

Similar to frying operations, VOC and particulate matter (PM) emissions are the main concerns when it comes to spray-drying process emissions.

APC strongly recommends our CarbonPure systems to control VOCs and odors emitted from spray-dryers. APC has provided CarbonPure adsorption systems, some with additional particulate control provided, to several clients who spray-dry fragrance and flavor-containing intermediate products and were experiencing odor complaints. Our systems in this area have been successfully operating since 2014.
